CTE Award Criteria

CTE Awards Process:

1. Take previous year criteria categories and refine. Perhaps add some new categories? (Possible categories: best marketing efforts, best M&E and record keeping, best customer service, most environmentally friendly, most sustainable, biggest community benefits, best efforts at transparency etc.)

2. Two options:

OPTION A.

a. Ask individuals such as tour guides, tour operator, managers, STAR staff, people who are neutral but with knowledge in Uganda’s tourism industry to nominate candidates who they believe exemplify best practices in these categories.

Note: community members may not nominate. Community members are defined as people who are members of a community based organization (for the reason that they are not exposed to a number of different communities, and also to avoid bias).

b. Once nominations have been submitted (late nominations/nominations submitted after the given deadline will not be considered), the list will be published and CBTEs will be notified through UCOTA communications.

c. The UCOTA secretariat and the Pearls Advisory Committee, assuming they are knowledgeableabout community based tourism, shall vote for what they believe is the best in each category.

o Voting shall consist of one vote for the best CTE in each category.

o Each voter shall receive only one vote.

o The candidate with the most votes in each category shall win the award.

d. The winner in each category will be invited to an event where they are recognized, and are asked to give a 2-3 minute speech. Winners shall also be recognized in a post-event press release. Other CTEs will be informed of the winners through UCOTA communications

OPTION B.

a. Ask communities to nominate themselves or another community group, asking specific questions pertaining to a certain category and requesting specific details about the operations, reporting, community development projects, and requiring evidence to corroborate claims. (This method will mimic actual proposal writing, and is to obtain information for marketing collateral as well.)

b. Once nominations have been submitted (late nominations/nominations submitted after the given deadline will not be considered), the list will be published and CBTEs will be notified through UCOTA communications.

c. The UCOTA secretariat will prepare an online survey (Survey Monkey) to allow its stakeholders to vote for which community they believe is the best in each category. Information provided in communities’ applications shall be made available to aid the voting process.

o Voting shall consist of one vote for the best CTE in each category.

o Each voter shall receive only one vote.

Community members

Through her core activities, Uganda Community Tourism Association (UCOTA) exists to empower poor communities improve their lives through community based tourism products for example accommodation, guiding, cultural performances, art and crafts.

UCOTA tourism groups

A fraction of UCOTA member groups provide tourism services and experiences around Uganda. these are mainly located in the neighborhoods of national parks, game reserves, urban centers and on main tourists routes where tourist numbers are high. The activities commonly provided by these communities include accommodation and home stays, village and nature walks outside the protected areas, handicrafts sales and demonstrations, music performances and workshops, storytelling and cultural demonstration.

These tourism activities and services benefit both the people and the environment. They purchase all their inputs from the local community ranging from the labor and human resource, food supplies, crafts supplies. The resulting income provides a very good alternative to the income that the local communities get from the illegal or environmentally unfriendly activities such as poaching, charcoal burning, poor farming methods, pit sawing or any un regulated timber cutting. As a result, the tourism activities help the communities benefit more from the natural and cultural resources without depleting them. Other resulting benefits include the skills, partnerships and local investment of the resulting income all that remain in the community in a long run

UCOTA Crafts groups

Crafts produced by UCOTA members (90% women) are of different types, depending on the locally available raw materials as well as the traditional skills and culture in their areas. The handcrafts range from beautiful basketry, tie and dye, hand-made paper products, tablemats and aprons, jewelry, paper Mache art to woodcarvings. Most UCOTA products are organic.

Farm residues (millet/sorghum straw and banana fiber) are used in the basket weaving as well as sustainably harvested fibers from the forests and wetlands

Member groups are located all around Uganda (see map). UCOTA provides these tourism enterprises with valuable training in product development, the use of natural dyes, quality control and support them in marketing. They are the immediate direct beneficiaries of the UCOTA core activities. Through the secretariat in Kampala, UCOTA organizes training and marketing programs focused on these tourism products. UCOTA holds a team of field officers and consultants that take the support services to the communities through the residential and onsite trainings.
